About the course
Analyse the intersection of climate change and sustainable development in Africa, identifying strategic opportunities for structural transformation through green industrialisation and a just energy transition. Interrogate policy debates on mitigation and adaptation responses in major economies - especially in terms of their impact on Africa, and be introduced to innovative strategies to advance climate-resilient development. Explore opportunities to advance equitable outcomes for Africa through Africa-EU cooperation, and be equipped to make a meaningful impact in policy processes like the COP conferences.
Core thematic areas include:
- Just energy transitions and renewable energy in Africa;
- Green industrialisation in Africa;
- Regional integration and supply chains;
- Critical mineral supply and renewable technologies; and
- Technological innovation for climate-resilient development.
Successful course participants will be able to:
- Identify the levers of transformative change toward sustainability and Africa’s green structural transformation
- Draw on Africa-Europe relations to advance the green transition
- Design and implement public policies or business strategies that place sustainability and equitable development at their core
- Design or scale structurally transformative practices within your organization and professional environment
- Communicate effectively and advocate for sustainability, the just transition and development
- Understand Africa’s most pressing development and sustainability challenges and generate fit for purpose solutions to address them
Course Content
Delivered over 12 weeks, the course comprises the following modules:
- Module 0: Orientation
- Module 1: Navigating climate and development challenges in Africa
- Module 2: Climate change and Africa's green structural transformation
- Module 3: Energy transitions and security
- Module 4: The climate-trade nexus & negotiations
- Module 5: Managing climate impact
- Module 6: Financing green structural transformation
- Module 7: African regional integration & climate resilient development
- Module 8: Africa & Europe: channels of cooperation
- Module 9: Negotiating Africa's green future
- Module 10: Consolidation and conclusion

Applicants complete an application form, and a selection process determines who will be offered places on the programme.
