Design Thinking for Learning Designers

About the course

This course is aimed at taking participants through a design thinking process based on design thinking principles and approaches. Tackling a real-life learning and/or teaching problem, participants will explore context-sensitive solutions in multidisciplinary groups and build a prototype in order to gather feedback and suggest improvements.

Course dates

  • 2025: 1 September to 12 October 2025 (Mon/Wed)
  • 2026: Cohort 1: 30 March to 17 May 2026 (Tue/Thu)
  • 2026: Cohort 2: 22 June to 2 August 2026 (Mon/Wed)

Course content

  • Week 1: Orientation and Onboarding
  • Week 2: Design Thinking Dash
  • Week 3: Design Thinking principles and ethics
  • Week 4: Challenge definition and ideation
  • Week 5: Prototyping and testing
  • Week 6: Consolidation and Assessment

Learning objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe a Design Thinking process;
  • List different Design Thinking activities;
  • Explain Design Thinking principles and reveal Design Thinking mindsets;
  • Engage in a learning design process and decision making processes using Design Thinking processes; and
  • Reflect on a Design Thinking intervention.

The full cost of the course is R5500 with discounts available as follows:

  • When enrolling 5 or more participants, participants are entitled to 10% discount.
  • UCT staff are entitled to a 30% discount i.e. R3850. 
  • All current full-time postgraduate students from any institution are entitled to a 50% discount i.e. R2750.
