Learning Design in Practice

About the course

This course takes an experiential approach to learning design. Participants undertake a collective learning design process, selecting from common learning design activities and models to design a response to a learning problem.

Course dates

• Cohort 1: Hybrid (online and in person): 29 June - 26 July 2026, with a face-to-face block week 6 - 10 July 2026 (Tue/Thu)
• Cohort 2: Online (online only): 3 August - 13 September 2026 (Mon/Wed)

Course content

• Week 1: Orientation and onboarding
• Week 2: Immersive LD experience (block week)
• Week 3: Application of LD model in context
• Week 4: Application of LD model in context
• Week 5: Application of LD model in context
• Week 6: Consolidation and assessment

Learning objectives

​​​After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify a learning problem or opportunity;
• Have a thorough understanding of their design context and the participants they are designing for;
• Develop learning outcomes;
• Apply and/or facilitate a learning design process following selected models; and
• Develop a learning design plan.

Course cost

The full cost of the course is R6000 with discounts available as follows:

• When enrolling 5 or more participants, participants are entitled to 10% discount.
• UCT staff are entitled to a 30% discount i.e. R4200. 
• All current full-time postgraduate students from any institution are entitled to a 50% discount i.e. R3000. 
• HELTASA members are entitled to a 10% discount i.e. R5400.
