Designing with AI

About the course

Designing with AI is a 6-week online short course that forms part of a suite of short courses that support blended and online learning design. Developed by the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) at UCT, this course equips learning designers, educators, and trainers to understand, apply, and reflect on AI's role in teaching, learning, assessment, and research.

Course dates

• Cohort 1: 16 February to 29 March 2026 (Tue/Thu)
• Cohort 2: 4 May to 14 June 2026 (Mon/Wed)
• Cohort 3: 3 August to 13 September 2026 (Tue/Thu)

Learning objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe the workings of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs);
• Acquire foundations of prompt engineering;
• Select and use AI tools to support teaching, learning, assessment and research;
• Integrate AI into teaching, learning, assessment and research within a specific context;
• Discuss and reflect on ethical practices in AI engagement within a specific context.

Certification options

Two types of certificates will be issued for this course:

• Attended: Attend 80% of workshops
• Passed: Attend 80% of workshops, submit coursework (individual and group work) as required, complete the course evaluation, and successfully complete the final individual assignment.

A letter of recognition of participation will be issued to participants who attend 80% of workshops, submit coursework, and complete the course evaluation (no final assignment submitted).

Course cost

The full cost of the course is R6000 with discounts available as follows:

• When enrolling 5 or more participants, participants are entitled to 10% discount.
• UCT staff are entitled to a 30% discount i.e. R4200.
• All current full-time postgraduate students from any institution are entitled to a 50% discount i.e. R3000.
• HELTASA members are entitled to a 10% discount i.e. R5400.
