About the course
This short course equips laboratory staff and students with the core health and safety knowledge needed to work confidently in a chemical-oriented laboratory. Built around the RAMP framework (Recognise hazards, Assess risks, Minimise risks, Prepare for emergencies), it shows how a risk-based safety culture, including near-miss reporting, turns awareness into everyday behaviour. Participants learn to identify chemical hazards, rate risks with a risk assessment matrix, and use inspection checklists and job hazard analysis. They then explore the hierarchy of controls, from fume hoods and biosafety cabinets to safe work practices for housekeeping, electrical equipment, glassware and compressed gases, as well as signage, SOPs and selecting PPE. The course also covers emergency equipment, chemical spill response and an introduction to GHS classification and Safety Data Sheets. In-class activities and a summative quiz reinforce learning.
