About the course

The Leadership and Management Course for Strengthened Public Health Services (SPHS-LAM) is a 12-week online short course via MS Teams that aims to provide participants with the essential leadership and management knowledge, understanding and skills, which is essential for improving effectiveness and efficiency of health care services in lower- and middle- income countries (LMICs). The SPHS-LAM course forms part of the portfolio of courses aimed at strengthening public health services.

Learning objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate a deep understanding of common leadership and management approaches applied in healthcare in LMICs settings;
• Apply the principles and techniques of personal and ethical leadership and management in their work and life arenas;
• Apply the principles and techniques of strategic leadership and management in their work and life arenas;
• Apply the principles and techniques of situational and change leadership and management in their work and life arenas;
• Construct and implement their individual and team leadership and development plans, assisted by faculty.

The SPHS-LAM course is targeted for clinicians, educators, researchers or programme / project managers, coordinators, and administrators responsible for delivery of public eye health care services people working in prevention of blindness programmes in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

3. Situational leadership & contextual awareness
4. Strategic leadership & business planning
5. Team leadership
6. Leadership communication
7. What is management?
8. Management functions
9. Management practices: personal and personnel
10. Managing resources: time, cost & quality
11. Managing situations
12. Managing complexity (a challenge)

Course cost

The full cost of the course is R5000 with discounts available as follows:

• Organisations are entitled to 10% discount when enrolling 5 or more participants.
• UCT staff are entitled to a 25% discount i.e. R3750. 
• All current full-time postgraduate students (proof of registration required) and graduate alumni from UCT, UWC, CPUT, and US (proof of graduation required) are entitled to a 50% discount i.e. R2500. 
• Current incumbents of the UCT-CEHI Volunteer Internship Programme are entitled to 100% fee waiver.
