Managing a technical team poses unique management challenges as the demands, needs, and motivators of technical staff are often underestimated in organisations, resulting in high staff turnover rates. Additionally, technical professionals are often encouraged to develop their technical skills at the cost of leadership and interpersonal skills. Leadership approaches must be customised to retain these employees and ensure optimal performance, effective development, and growth.
The Managing Technical Professionals online short course from the University of Cape Town (UCT) is designed to enhance leadership and soft skills. This eight-week online course explores techniques that can be leveraged to improve team performance and innovation while enhancing career development opportunities for students and their direct reports. The course covers team dynamics, effective communication channels, strategic thinking, and change management. By the end of the course, students will have developed a team-specific and personal strategic action plan that aligns with organisational objectives.
