About the course
This course offers newly appointed judicial officers the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the foundational principles and practical skills essential for judicial excellence.
Drawing on African and global perspectives, it combines constitutional theory with hands-on practical exercises to strengthen judicial reasoning, integrity, case management, and effectiveness in the administration of justice.
Participants will explore their role in a constitutional democracy, tackle real-world ethical dilemmas, and develop robust tools for judgment writing, case management, and presiding over motions and applications.

Course content
- Expert-led lectures and discussions on constitutional principles, ethics, and judgment writing;
- Interactive hypothetical scenarios to practice resolving ethical dilemmas and threats to judicial independence.
- Practical case management exercises with tips to combat case backlogs;
- Mock trials and judgment drafting sessions with peer and facilitator feedback;
- Analysis of real-world applications performed by law students to hone decision-making skills.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Articulate and uphold the core principles of the Rule of Law, Separation of Powers, and Judicial Independence.
- Apply robust judicial ethics, including recusal principles, and manage cases effectively to reduce backlogs.
- Employ modern approaches to constitutional and statutory interpretation in judicial reasoning.
- Draft clear, concise, and well-structured judgments, applying principles of plain language and managing unconscious bias.
- Efficiently manage motion and application proceedings and conduct court proceedings with a gender-sensitive approach.
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Judicial Institute for Africa (JIFA), Faculty of Law, University of Cape Town.

R20 000 (includes course materials, tea and lunch every day and a certificate, excludes flights and accommodation). Includes full access to course materials, discussion forums, and certification. Institutional and group enrolment options are available.
