ICT@UCT: getting started

About the course

Starting somewhere new comes with a lot to take in — and navigating a university's digital environment shouldn't add to the stress. ICT@UCT: Getting Started is a friendly, practical onboarding session designed to help new UCT staff and students get up and running with the tools and systems they'll rely on from day one.

In a single half-day session, we walk you through the essentials: connecting to UCT's Wi-Fi, setting up and accessing your email, viewing your payslip, and finding your way around the key UCT platforms and digital services. There's no rush and no jargon — just clear, step-by-step guidance in a relaxed space where questions are welcomed.

This session runs in-person or virtually via Microsoft Teams, but not in hybrid format. Whether you're brand new to UCT or have been around for a few weeks and still feel uncertain about the digital side of things, this is the place to start.

Course content

• Connect to UCT Wi-Fi on your device
• Set up and access your UCT email account
• Navigate key UCT systems and platforms relevant to your role
• Understand what digital support is available to you and where to find it
• Access LinkedIn Learning — UCT's online learning platform — on desktop and mobile for on-demand training at your own pace
• Ask questions and get practical, hands-on assistance from ICTS staff
• View and download your payslip via the UCT staff portal

• New UCT staff members who need a guided introduction to UCT's digital environment
• New students who want practical help getting set up on UCT systems
• Anyone who joined recently and still needs support with the basics
