About the course
This course aims to introduce participants to the field of learning analytics as a subfield of data analysis used by learning design. It will explore widely adopted approaches to learning analytics that can inform the design, facilitation and evaluation of learning experiences. It will also cover the limitations, ethics and trends in learning analytics that learning designers need to engage with in practice.
Course content
- Week 1: Welcome and onboarding
- Week 2: Introduction to learning analytics
- Week 3: Learning analytics cases across different contexts
- Week 4: Ethics and learning analytics
- Week 5: Learning analytics in your practice
- Week 6: Consolidation and Assessment
Learning objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish between the approaches followed in learning analytics from those in the broader data analytics field;
- Assess the appropriateness of different ways of using learning analytics during the design, facilitation and evaluation of learning interventions; and
- Discuss opportunities, limitations and ethical dilemmas when using learning analytics.
Course cost
The full cost of the course is R6000 with discounts available as follows:
- When enrolling 5 or more participants, participants are entitled to 10% discount.
- UCT staff are entitled to a 30% discount i.e. R4200.
- All current full-time postgraduate students from any institution are entitled to a 50% discount i.e. R3000.
- HELTASA members are entitled to a 10% discount i.e. R5400.
