About the course
This module explores the intersection of ethics and data sharing, following the narrative journey of two fictional researchers as they navigate the complexities of open data. It covers key topics such as the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), Data Management Plans (DMPs), and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs). The module examines ethical drivers and challenges, as well as issues related to data protection, curation, sharing, and transfer. By the end of the module, participants will understand the balance between research integrity and open scholarship, culminating in the researchers' decision on whether to share their data openly.
Course Content
This course covers:
- The South African Protection of Personal Information act in a research context
- Data management plans, data privacy/protection impact assessments
- The tension between ethical imperatives to protect data versus the open scholarship movement to make data freely available
- Resources and guidance documents to support responsible research practice
The course contains a formative knowledge check to enable you to gauge you progress and understanding. Additionally, there is a summative final assessment, which will trigger an email confirming completion of the course and competence.
